On the morning of September 11, 1973, President Salvador Allende was violently ousted by Chile's armed forces, led by General Augusto Pinochet. Then US President Richard Nixon’s order to the CIA to "make the economy scream" in Chile to "prevent Allende from coming to power or to unseat him," culminated in the violent overthrow of the democratically-elected Popular Unity government of Salvador Allende changed country’s Allende’s "democratic way to socialism" was crushed in a bloody coup that led to a 15 years, reign of terror. Thousands of innocent people were kidnapped, tortured and killed.
